Founder’s Note
I’m a small business owner in Chicago, and this ICC-mandated flat utility fee has had a real impact on my business. I’ve been operating my storefront for 18 years in Lincoln Park/Lakeview. That sounds ritzy and fancy maybe but it’s just me. I’m not some big multi-employee shop. As a sole proprietor with modest energy usage, the Low-Income Discount Adjustment added a charge that significantly increased my monthly bill — despite no meaningful change in usage. Most of the year, it’s doubled the cost.
I support helping low-income households afford essential utilities. But shifting that cost onto small businesses like mine, and charging us the same flat fee as large chains, creates a new financial burden on neighborhood businesses already struggling with rising costs. There are better ways to fund assistance programs without putting small businesses at risk.
I urge you to sign the petition for the support of the local Chicago businesses you enjoy visiting. We are simply asking for a fair rate, not a flat fee. It’s hands down the most hostile act I’ve ever seen towards small businesses in all the years I’ve been a part of this community.
During this time of rapid inflation and federal tariffs, as well as a historic 25% vacancy rate for Chicago’s commercial real estate, we need your help more than ever.
Thank you.
